OUT FROM THE FOG

Matthew Reeder’s OUT FROM THE FOG explores the cathartic nature of radio noise, interference, and fragile transmissions using a variety of vintage ham radios, test equipment, and the madness of modular synthesis. With a bold three-hours of nonstop runtime, the project is designed to rest in the background of an acoustic space, or on comfortable headphones, played quietly as a fan or space heater would accompany the soundscape of the area. As the various moments usher by a multitude of layered bandwidths, the noise floors and patterns either provide the unsettling paranoia of the inspired narrative or lull the listener into a state of sleepiness enough to make one wonder if they heard something unusual come through the transmissions.

The project was inspired by Matthew Reeder’s own pursuit to experience the tranquil pressure of deep winter snow, coupled with the uncomfortable tension that comes from isolation and claustrophobia.
